Introduction
Two stacked ruffles have to clear the romper crotch without swallowing the fuchsia underlayer. This crochet baby dress set pattern uses DK yarn, a 4 mm hook, and a newborn/0–3 month chest benchmark of 35.6 cm. The construction is intermediate: you shape a raglan yoke, layer two skirts, add a diaper cover, then match the booties and bow headband. One coordinated yarn palette also reduces leftover part-balls.
The Design: What Makes the Turquoise Ruffle Set Different
The first structural decision is separating the skirt into two independently anchored layers. Turquoise stays on top, while the longer fuchsia ruffle remains visible below it instead of becoming trapped inside the upper gathering. Second, the bodice uses four controlled raglan increase points; that gives the ruffled baby romper crochet pattern enough sleeve depth without adding bulky shoulder seams.
A separate hourglass-shaped diaper cover handles crotch fit, so skirt fullness does not alter the leg openings. The Mary Jane construction follows the same logic: a firm oval sole carries a reduced toe, then the strap crosses above the opening. That keeps the crochet baby booties pattern visually consistent with the dress.
A common mistake is attaching both skirt layers to the same loop of the waist round. The layers then collapse into one thick ridge rather than reading as two distinct tiers.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intermediate | Not published by benchmark source | 35.6 cm chest; 34.3 cm reference length | 4.0 mm | Newborn / 0–3 months |
The benchmark dimensions are based on a comparable newborn crochet dress set published by Crochet ‘n’ Create and indexed on Ravelry.
Materials and Tools
Yarn
The project works best with a smooth DK-weight yarn. Comparable newborn dress sets commonly use DK yarn with a 4 mm hook. Because this design includes two full skirt layers, flowers, booties, and a bow headband, the contrast color requires more yarn than a simple edging-only design.
- Turquoise — DK — 150–200 g — Paintbox Simply DK or Bernat Softee Baby
- Fuchsia — DK — 50–100 g — matching DK yarn
- White — small DK scrap — for embroidered flower centers
Tools
- 4.0 mm crochet hook for the bodice, skirts, diaper cover, sleeves, and headband
- 3.5 mm crochet hook for firmer bootie soles
- 3 sew-on snaps for the diaper-cover crotch
- 3 small buttons for an optional back-neck closure
- Tapestry needle
- At least 4 stitch markers
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Blocking pins
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- inc = 2 stitches worked into one stitch
- dec / sc2tog = single crochet 2 together
- sl st = slip stitch
- st / sts = stitch / stitches
- BLO = back loop only
- FLO = front loop only
- RS / WS = right side / wrong side
- sk = skip
- rep = repeat
An invisible decrease is not required for these garment pieces; standard sc2tog creates a flatter shaping line that is easier to measure.
Pattern — Step by Step
The garment pieces use rows or joined rounds as specified. Continuous spiral construction is not suitable for this design.
Bodice and Raglan Yoke
Yarn: turquoise.
Foundation: Ch 55.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 6 ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in next 9 ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in next 18 ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in next 9 ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in final 7 ch. Place a marker in the center sc of each 3-sc group. Turn. (62)
Row 2: Ch 1. Sc to first marked st, 3 sc in marked st; repeat at all four markers, working sc in every other st. Move each marker into the center sc of its new 3-sc group. Turn. (70)
Row 3: Repeat Row 2. (78)
Row 4: Repeat Row 2. (86)
Row 5: Repeat Row 2. (94)
Row 6: Repeat Row 2. (102)
The distribution now gives 13 stitches at each back edge, 21 stitches between each pair of sleeve-side markers, and 30 front stitches between the two front raglan markers.
Row 7 — Divide for sleeves: Ch 1, sc in next 13 sts, ch 3, sk next 23 sts, sc in next 30 sts, ch 3, sk next 23 sts, sc in final 13 sts. Sl st to first sc to close the lower yoke. (62)
The 23 skipped stitches at each side become the sleeve openings. The 3-chain bridges form the underarms.
Round 8: Ch 1, sc in every sc and underarm ch around. Join with sl st. (62)
Rounds 9–13: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (62)
Round 14: Ch 1, sc BLO in every st. Join. (62)
Round 15: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (62)
Fasten off, leaving a 15 cm tail.
The unused front loops from Round 14 become the anchor for the turquoise upper ruffle.
Ruffled Sleeves — Make 2
Yarn: turquoise with fuchsia edging.
Join turquoise at the center of the 3-chain underarm bridge.
Round 1: Sc evenly through the 3 underarm chains and 23 skipped yoke stitches. Join. (26)
Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around. Join. (52)
Round 3: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. (52)
Change to fuchsia.
Round 4: (Sc in next 3 sts, ch 2, sl st into the last sc made, sc in next st) ×13. Join. (52 base sts)
Fasten off. Leave a 10 cm tail.
The increase in Round 2 creates the shallow flutter visible at each shoulder rather than a fitted sleeve tube.
Turquoise Upper Ruffle
Yarn: turquoise with fuchsia final edge.
Join turquoise to any unused FLO from Bodice Round 14.
Round 1: Sc in every free loop. Join. (62)
Round 2: (Dc in next st, 2 dc in next st) ×31. (93)
Round 3: (Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) ×31. (124)
Round 4: (Dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st) ×31. (155)
Round 5: (Dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st) ×31. (186)
Rounds 6–18: Dc in each st around. (186)
Measure from the shoulder before edging. Add or remove plain 186-stitch rounds when necessary so the finished garment approaches the intended length.
Change to fuchsia.
Round 19: (Sc in next 5 sts, ch 2, sl st in last sc made, sc in next st) ×31. (186 base sts)
Fasten off. Leave a 12 cm tail.
Fuchsia Lower Ruffle
Yarn: fuchsia.
Join fuchsia to any stitch of Bodice Round 15, behind the turquoise layer.
Round 1: Sc in each st around. (62)
Round 2: 2 dc in every st. (124)
Round 3: (Dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st) ×31. (155)
Round 4: (Dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st) ×31. (186)
Rounds 5–21: Dc in every st. (186)
This layer should extend approximately two to three rounds below the turquoise ruffle. Remove one or more plain rounds if the contrast section appears too deep.
Round 22 — Scallop: (Sl st in next st, 4 dc in next st, sl st in next st) ×62. (62 scallops)
Fasten off. Leave a 12 cm tail.
Diaper Cover — Back Panel
Yarn: turquoise.
Foundation: Ch 55.
Rows 1–10: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. (54)
Row 11: Sc2tog, sc in next 50 sts, sc2tog. (52)
Row 12: Sc2tog, sc in next 48 sts, sc2tog. (50)
Row 13: Sc2tog, sc in next 46 sts, sc2tog. (48)
Row 14: Sc2tog, sc in next 44 sts, sc2tog. (46)
Row 15: Sc2tog, sc in next 42 sts, sc2tog. (44)
Row 16: Sc2tog, sc in next 40 sts, sc2tog. (42)
Row 17: Sc2tog, sc in next 38 sts, sc2tog. (40)
Row 18: Sc2tog, sc in next 36 sts, sc2tog. (38)
Row 19: Sc2tog, sc in next 34 sts, sc2tog. (36)
Row 20: Sc2tog, sc in next 32 sts, sc2tog. (34)
Row 21: Sc2tog, sc in next 30 sts, sc2tog. (32)
Row 22: Sc2tog, sc in next 28 sts, sc2tog. (30)
Rows 23–30: Sc across. (30)
Fasten off, leaving a 25 cm tail.
Diaper Cover — Front Panel
Yarn: turquoise.
Work Rows 1–22 exactly as for the Back Panel, ending with 30 sts.
Rows 23–26: Sc across. (30)
Fasten off, leaving a 20 cm tail.
The back crotch tab is four rows longer than the front. That overlap carries the three snaps beneath the skirt.
Flower Appliqués — Make 4
Yarn: fuchsia with white centers.
Ch 4 and join with sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: Work (sl st, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, sl st) into the ring five times. (5 petals)
Fasten off, leaving a 20 cm sewing tail.
Thread white yarn through the center and work several compact embroidery stitches. An embroidered center is preferable to a detachable button for an infant garment.
Make two flowers for the bodice and one for each bootie.
Mary Jane Booties — Make 2
Yarn: turquoise sole with fuchsia upper.
Use the 3.5 mm hook for the sole.
Foundation: Ch 9.
Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 6 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working along the opposite side of the foundation chain, sc in next 6 ch, 2 sc in final chain. Join. (18)
Round 2: Inc in first st, sc in next 6 sts, inc in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 6 sts, inc in each of final 2 sts. (24)
Round 3: Sc in next st, inc in next st, sc in next 6 sts, (sc in next st, inc in next st) ×3, sc in next 6 sts, (sc in next st, inc in next st) ×2. (30)
Measure the sole. A useful 0–3 month benchmark is approximately 9 cm.
Round 4: Sc BLO around. (30)
Change to fuchsia.
Rounds 5–6: Sc around. (30)
Round 7 — Toe shaping: Sc in next 9 sts, sc2tog ×6, sc in final 9 sts. (24)
Round 8: Sc in next 7 sts, sc2tog ×5, sc in final 7 sts. (19)
Round 9: Sc around. (19)
Fasten off.
Mary Jane Strap — Make 2
Join fuchsia to the outer side of the bootie opening.
Row 1: Ch 15. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (14)
Fasten off with a 15 cm tail. Cross the strap over the opening and stitch it securely to the opposite side.
For a functional closure, place a small sew-on snap beneath the strap. Sew one fuchsia flower securely to each toe.
Headband
Yarn: turquoise.
Foundation: Ch 60 loosely. Join without twisting.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in every ch. Join. (60)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, (ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st) ×29, ch 1, sk final st, join to first sc. (30 sc + 30 ch-1 spaces)
Round 3: Sl st into first ch-1 space, ch 1, sc in same space, (ch 1, sc in next ch-1 space) around. Join. (30 sc + 30 ch-1 spaces)
Round 4: Ch 1, sc once in each sc and once in each ch-1 space. (60)
Round 5: Sc around. (60)
Fasten off. Check the finished circumference before attaching the bow.
Fuchsia Bow
Yarn: fuchsia with turquoise center band.
Foundation: Ch 23.
Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (22)
Rows 2–7: Ch 1, turn, hdc across. (22)
Fasten off with a 25 cm tail. Fold the rectangle so the short ends meet at the rear, stitch them together, then pinch the center.
Bow Center Band
With turquoise, ch 7.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (6)
Rows 2–8: Ch 1, turn, sc across. (6)
Wrap this strip around the pinched fuchsia bow and stitch the ends together behind it. Sew the completed bow securely to the center front of the turquoise headband.
Assembly
- Lay the bodice flat and confirm that both raglan lines contain the same number of rows before attaching any decorative pieces.
- Position the turquoise overskirt so its attachment line remains in the unused front loops of Round 14. Keep the fuchsia underskirt attached one round lower.
- Arrange both skirt layers with the fuchsia hem extending two to three rounds below the turquoise edge, then block according to the yarn label.
- Fold each sleeve ruffle outward and check that the fuchsia trim sits at the same depth on both armholes.
- Place the diaper-cover front and back panels right sides together. Seam the outer side edges corresponding to Rows 1–10, leaving the shaped lower sections open for the legs.
- Overlap the longer back crotch tab beneath the front tab by four rows. Sew three snaps across the overlap at approximately equal intervals.
- Sew two fuchsia flowers vertically down the center front of the bodice. Align their centers with the garment midpoint.
- Add one flower to the toe of each Mary Jane bootie. Match their orientation before burying the sewing tails.
- Center the fuchsia bow on the headband opposite the rear joining seam. Stitch through the turquoise center band and headband several times.
- Add the back-yoke closure if required, weave in every remaining tail, and measure the finished chest, length, bootie soles, and headband circumference.
The completed set consists of one double-ruffle dress, one diaper cover, two Mary Jane booties, four flower motifs, and one bow headband.
7 Technical Tips
- Marker drift at the raglan corners: a marker placed in the side sc rather than the center sc makes the shoulder line rotate. Move all four markers into the center stitch of every new 3-sc group immediately after each increase row.
- Chest measurement failure: the closed 62-stitch lower bodice should approach the intended 35.6 cm chest benchmark after blocking and normal ease. If it is several centimeters smaller at your gauge, adjust the hook or stitch count before beginning the skirts.
- Ruffle cupping: a tight fuchsia edge can pull the 186-stitch turquoise ruffle upward. Change to a hook 0.5 mm larger for the final edging round if the hem stops lying flat.
- Bootie mismatch: both soles should be within approximately 3 mm of one another and close to the 9 cm 0–3 month benchmark after Round 3. A larger difference remains visible after the toe decreases.
- Crotch-gap failure: keep the full four-row overlap between the back and front diaper-cover tabs. A shorter overlap can create an opening between
