Notes

Work in continuous rounds unless stated otherwise.
The large octopus uses plush yarn for a rounded, soft finish.
The baby octopuses can be made in lighter weight yarn for contrast and size difference.
Tentacles are worked as separate curled tubes and sewn to the underside of the body.
Suction details are added after the tentacles are attached.

1. Large Octopus Head and Body

Insert safety eyes between R12–13, about 10–12 stitches apart. Embroider lashes, brows, and smile. Add blush cheeks below the eyes.

Stuff firmly, keeping the shape round and full. Fasten off, leaving a long tail if you want to cinch the underside opening further before attaching tentacles.

2. Large Tentacles (Make 8)

With light blue plush yarn:

Stuff lightly, only in the first half, so each tentacle stays soft and curlable. Fasten off with a long tail.

3. Tentacle Curl Shaping

To encourage the rounded spiral seen in the sample, lightly bend each tentacle into a curved shape before sewing. You can also add a slightly tighter tension through the last several rounds to help the tip curve inward.

4. Suction Details for Large Tentacles

With white yarn:

Make small bobble-like dots or tiny circles and sew them along one side of each tentacle.

Simple option for each suction cup:

Fasten off. Make enough to place 6–10 dots per tentacle depending on visible length.

5. Large Face Details

Insert eyes before final stuffing so the face stays balanced.
Embroider a small curved smile between the cheeks.
Add short upper lashes and a tiny brow line above each eye.
Sew or embroider soft pink cheek patches under the eyes.

6. Baby Octopus Head and Body (Make 4)

Use pastel pink, lavender, and pale blue as desired.

7. Baby Tentacles (Make 8 per Baby)

Stuff only the first few rounds or leave unstuffed for a softer drape. Fasten off with a long tail.

8. Baby Face Details

Use a simple curved embroidered smile centered between the eyes.
Add tiny blush patches under the eyes for the blue and pink babies if desired.
The top baby in the sample has a very minimal face, so keep the expression small and centered.

9. Optional Mini Suction Dots for Babies

With white or matching yarn:

For the blue baby in the sample, tiny pale suction details appear under some arms.

Use French knots, bobbles, or mini circles made with:

Fasten off and sew sparingly.

10. Assembly for Large Octopus

Arrange the 8 large tentacles evenly around the underside opening of the large body.
Sew each tentacle securely, curving them outward and forward as you work.
Attach the white suction details along the inner visible side of each tentacle.
Check that the body sits level and the tentacles spread symmetrically.
Adjust stuffing through any remaining gap before fully closing.

11. Assembly for Baby Octopuses

Sew 8 baby tentacles evenly around the underside of each baby body.
Shape the arms so they curl slightly upward for a tucked seated pose.
Add any optional suction details after the tentacles are attached.
Weave in all ends securely.

12. Display Arrangement

To recreate the grouped family look from the sample, place one baby centered on top of the large octopus head and position the others between the front tentacles. Tack them lightly in place with a few hidden stitches if the piece is meant for display rather than play.
